Set in a field in rural Essex in the summer of 1536, three young women — Anna, Jane and Mariella — meet at their childhood gathering place to trade gossip as word arrives from London of Anne Boleyn's arrest and execution. As the distant violence against a fallen queen seeps into their own lives, the three friends face choices that all carry the threat of violence. Ava Pickett's debut play, winner of the 2024 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and directed by Lyndsey Turner, is a funny and devastating portrait of female friendship in a world stacked against women.
