The Queen Is Dead (1986)

Guitar lines chime under lyrics that swing between comic spite and real ache, aiming at the monarchy, the press and the singer's own loneliness. The English band the Smiths, built around Morrissey's voice and Johnny Marr's playing, wrote it back home in Greater Manchester. It hit number two in the UK, and NME called it the greatest album ever in 2013.
