Super Fly (1972)

By Curtis Mayfield

Falsetto vocals ride wah-wah guitar and swelling strings through songs about poverty, drug dealing and street life, written as a soundtrack to the 1972 blaxploitation film. Curtis Mayfield, formerly of the Impressions, pushed back on the movie's neutral view of dealers with stark lyrics of his own. It hit number 1 on the Billboard 200 and produced the top 10 singles "Freddie's Dead" and "Superfly."
