South African singer Miriam Makeba, later known as Mama Africa, made her debut here in 1960, drawing on Afropop, jazz and the traditional music of her homeland. She was also an activist who campaigned against apartheid and white-minority rule in South Africa. The record appears in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
