Mama Tried (1968)
Merle Haggard and his band The Strangers work a hard, spare country sound built around the title track, a first person account of a wayward son whose mother's efforts could not keep him straight. "Mama Tried" came out as a single in July 1968 and later entered the National Recording Registry, in 2016, for its cultural and historic significance. For fans of plainspoken outlaw country.
