Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989)
Tackles racism, poverty and substance abuse over new jack swing, hard rock, dance and industrial production, with swung synthetic percussion and softer ballads about romance. Janet Jackson (Control) pushed back on her label to make a concept album, working with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis in Minneapolis. It is the only album to send seven singles into the Billboard Hot 100 top five.
