Grândola, Vila Morena (1971)
A Portuguese song built on a marching cadence and massed voices, saluting the southern town of Grandola as a place of brotherhood and equality. Jose Afonso, the singer-songwriter behind the 1971 album Cantigas do Maio, first recorded it that year, with later releases as an EP in 1973 and a single in 1977. For listeners drawn to plainspoken folk protest music.
