Dusty in Memphis (1969)

Southern soul dressed in lush strings, sung by an English pop vocalist whose breathy delivery turns songs of longing into torch singing. Springfield cut the tracks in Memphis with producer Jerry Wexler, then added vocals in New York. It sold poorly in 1969 despite the UK top-10 single "Son of a Preacher Man," and entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001.
