Control (1986)

By Janet Jackson

Snapping drum machines, funk basslines and rap-inflected vocals carry songs about cutting ties: Jackson wrote these lyrics after annulling her marriage and breaking from her father as manager. Produced with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the 1986 record was her first to top the Billboard 200, and five singles, including "Nasty" and "When I Think of You," reached the Hot 100 top five.
