Aaliyah (2001)
Synthesizer melodies, fragmented beats and distorted guitar back songs about the stages of romantic love, stretching R&B and neo soul toward funk and electronica. The American singer recorded much of it in Australia at night while filming Queen of the Damned by day, and died in a plane crash weeks after its 2001 release. It topped the Billboard 200.
